Some people say it’s not the destination but the journey. This may be rather poetic on a particular level, but it is certainly not a good approach for those who want to be able to enjoy their retirement years to the fullest.
If you were in fact going on a journey you would make preparations in advance so that you didn’t get lost along the way or find yourself with inadequate resources. The destination that lies in wait for you is retirement, and you can either plan ahead intelligently or let the chips fall as they may.
Should you choose the former it is likely that you will be able to actually put your working years behind you and do all the things that you had hoped to be able to do once you could finally say that all of your time was your own.
Those who choose the latter often find themselves working until they become physically or mentally unable to do so.
In fact, studies have indicated that the baby boomer generation is not especially well prepared for retirement. Just last year there was a poll conducted by the Associated Press along with the website LifeGoesStrong.com, and around one fourth of respondents said that they would never be able to retire because they simply didn’t have the financial resources to do so.
The time is now to map out a path if you are currently without a plan. A great opportunity lies in wait, and it is up to you to take the necessary steps to take full advantage of it.
